Hospital Thoughts

I spent a few hours waiting at a hospital today and to fill the time I sat and played my favorite hobby  - people watching...these are lessons that I wrote down.

  1. Eye contact is needed to convey a message. Many medical staff walked up to the bed and started with the right words but the ones who "engaged"...smiled, looked in the patients eyes and then said the words.
  2. If you moan you get more attention, as the nurses have to make sure that you are responded to, that means that the "good" patients got less attention. (This is a huge one at work, how much of your time is drained by the time wasters, rule breakers etc vs time invested in your talent?)
  3. Communication is key to keeping the patient calm, rational and stress free.
  4. Simplicity of words and sentences for greater understanding.
  5. The power of empathy.
  6. The power of a 2 second...How are you feeling, and a warm smile?
  7. The need to keep some level of dignity for the person no matter what....

I find people watching great development, and today as hard as it was, was no different. The power of moving from conveying information and connecting with an individual on a personal level is HUGE, make sure you tap into the energy source at work.
