Hospital Thoughts
I spent a few hours waiting at a hospital today and to fill the time I sat and played my favorite hobby - people watching...these are lessons that I wrote down.
- Eye contact is needed to convey a message. Many medical staff walked up to the bed and started with the right words but the ones who "engaged"...smiled, looked in the patients eyes and then said the words.
- If you moan you get more attention, as the nurses have to make sure that you are responded to, that means that the "good" patients got less attention. (This is a huge one at work, how much of your time is drained by the time wasters, rule breakers etc vs time invested in your talent?)
- Communication is key to keeping the patient calm, rational and stress free.
- Simplicity of words and sentences for greater understanding.
- The power of empathy.
- The power of a 2 second...How are you feeling, and a warm smile?
- The need to keep some level of dignity for the person no matter what....
I find people watching great development, and today as hard as it was, was no different. The power of moving from conveying information and connecting with an individual on a personal level is HUGE, make sure you tap into the energy source at work.
