Gaining Promotion at Work

There is one question that reverberates in my head

"Why would someone promote you, if you don't promote yourself"

I don't mean being pushy or over confident, I mean building a personal brand and delivering day after day. I work with individuals on line to help them work out what they want from their life and then building an action plan to bring this dream to reality. Your brand is multi dimensional. It is about you as an individual, as a member of the community and also an employee.

Tips on gaining promotion would include:

  • Understand the objectives of your boss - and help them deliver on all the points.
  • Look to expand your talent  via projects, secondments etc...it increases your knowledge of the business and showcases your talent.
  • Invest in your own development. There are 3 main areas that I would encourage:- communication, emotional intelligence and execution.
  • Think about how you can add value to those around you, the more you add value the more your personal brand value rises.
  • Know your strengths and find ways of playing to them. I would also add know what makes you happy - when you are happy you will produce great work.
  • Have a personal mission statement, an honest appraisal of where you are now and a clear action plan of how to close the gap.
