Downturns in the Economy Can Be Great for Engagement!

I often think that the world need recessions or downturns, yes so the economy can balance itself but I also think that leaders need that mirror every now and again.

Dad used to say keep a mirror in your desk, you can tell bad leaders they use it to bask in their beauty, great leaders use it to reflect on their values and actions.

Downturns can be a great reflection time. In the great times companies throw money at employees to attempt to buy engagement. In hard times money is not available, therefore it is an opportunity to think about how engagement occurs and think about how you can express the basic needs of humanity - of caring, of feeling needed and valued.

Maybe the downturn is an opportunity to get that mirror out of your desk and bring humanity to leadership ?
