How to Find a Job on Twitter

Weekends I like to encourage other peoples views and today's blog post was submitted by Lenore Holditch, who specializes in writing about top online colleges. It is a two part post - yesterday Lenore talked about how to find a job via Facebook and today Twitter.

Similar with Facebook, most companies will set up Twitter accounts and will tweet news regarding their company, including info about their products and services.

1. If you already have your heart set on working for a particular company, your best bet would be to "follow" them and monitor all of their tweets—you never know when the company will alert their followers of a lucrative career opportunity.
2. Just make sure that your expertise and other info is included in your bio (as well as a link to your LinkedIn account if you have one).
3. Another option you have is to use the power of the hashtag. In the search box, type in the name of the company you would like to work for with the hashtag symbol (for example #AppleINC). This is because other individual accounts who you do not follow may post employment opportunities or inside scoop that the direct company does not announce.
4. If you do not have any particular company in mind, you can also search for employment opportunities using the hashtag with general career titles. Try typing in #engineerjobs.

How to Maximize Facebook to Find Employment

All too often recent college graduates will turn to online job classifieds and job sites like CareerBuilder to find employment opportunities only to end up coming to a dead end.  In turn, they then decide to vent about their unlucky experience to their "friends" on various social networks. But your social networking sites may just be able to land you a job instead. To learn how to maximize the potential of Facebook continue reading below.

Facebook. Despite the release of Google's new social network aimed at taking over Mark Zuckerberg's user base, Facebook is still the number one social network in the world.

With that said, the site is flooded with people who may be able to offer you a job.  There are two different ways you can go about finding employment opportunities, however.

• Use Facebook as a general search engine. This is how it works: simply type in the name of a company that you would like to work for in the site's search bar and see what pops up. Most likely some sort of "fan page" will appear in the results page. If you click on it, you should gain access to all sorts of useful information such as the demographics of a company (you can see images), description of their products, as well as a list of job openings. 

In fact, more and more companies are starting to list job openings via social media sites because they understand the impact it has in a consumer's everyday life—some users surf Facebook as much as two hours a day, especially the younger generation.  To get a better understanding of what you need to be looking for however, check out the snap shot of PepsiCo's fan page listed below—it features a short instructional video for those who are interested in job prospects for the company.

• Use marketing techniques to get the attention of people who are in your friend's list. This will have a greater impact if you already made "friends" with some important people in the industry you want to pursue, such as former professors and internship directors. Simply posting numerous statuses stating that you are interested in finding a job in a particular field and then linking your status to a LinkedIn profile or personal blog with more of your information for example may just do the trick and someone may bite.  
• But an even more effective approach is to create a Facebook Social AD.  These ads, although ideally designed for companies and business, can be a platform for you to promote yourself and your expertise. As long as you keep is short and snappy, your Ad may just be viewed by the right set of eyes that can grant you a lucky break. Again, make sure to link the Ad to some more content that will be able to provide more information about yourself.

Don't Lose Yourself, Social Networking

Who we are as people, is not necessarily reflective of how we are when we are with people.....it emerges when we are by ourselves. 

The problem with social networking is that it can overtake you, it can start remodelling you as a person because if you don't allow yourself time on your own to understand all what you are learning, and internalise what you are feeling then you risk losing yourself.

I found it interesting to speak a few podcasts ago with Joanne Cantor who actually said to be a workaholic you need to sleep more as that is when your brain processes all that you have taken in during the day!

Social networking is best used to grow and to learn. Through sharing stories, information and thoughts then you can widen your experiences to help develop your thoughts.

But for this to be positive, then I believe you need some time to internalise what you have learned, what value you can create for others, what YOU really think about your learnings....

Social media......the clue is in the title....It is great to be SOCIAL....it is great to take time for ME(dia) to grow.

 

When It's OK not to be 2 Faced but 5 Faced

Whatever industry you are in, whatever expertise you want to express...I believe that social media gives you the ability to show a 4 dimensional view of a topic.

So often people look at an idea head on....almost replaying the facts, but I think social media can explore all the sides of a topic. Life is not flat it is multidimensional...social media allows you to show your brand as multidimensional.

1. Look at the idea from above. Give an overview.
2. Look at the idea from below. How it has developed over time - either your perspective or in general.
3. Look at the idea from the 'right'. What is great about it, what works well
4. Look at the idea from the 'left'. What is the future, what can improve.
5. Look at the core...what is truly important either to you or to others?

Explore, discover, express, challenge, stimulate.....

Connecting with Value

The customer experiences your brand in a different way to how you experience it. 

This is often forgotten and often what you see as mundane or routine - the answering of a tweet or replying to a comment, the customer sees as a 'wow' factor. 

I am a huge fan of Mel Robbins and I remember her answering one of my tweets - maybe one day she will come on the podcast - it was special, it made me feel like the most valued reader EVER! 

Find a way of keeping your interactions on social networking sites, on blogs, on social media fresh.....remember these are not messages you post in a paper and then sit back to see sales rise....

Key is mirroring the importance that they see in the interaction, it is not what is important to you..instead find the joy in delivering what is important to them... ultimately social media is about connecting with value.

Connecting with value occurs when you treat each interaction with the same committment and a 100% focus on what they want to receive rather than what you want to give....... 

5 Tips on Social Media Boundaries

Imagine a painting with no border, imagine a song which continued forever, imagine a newsletter which had infinate pages.....irritating would come to mind! 

Life itself has boundaries remember and so should your social media efforts. Here are 5 thoughts for you to think about

1. It is the boundary which gives the meaning to your work. In simple terms think of the Grand Canyon, it is the edge which makes it so awe inspiring.
2. It is the boundaries which you won't cross which defines you and your brand as a personality.
3. The best part of a boundary is that it leaves a defined space to play, a space to breed ideas. A boundary is not a negative but a way of protecting the great ideas inside.
4. Boundaries should not be set out of fear but out of a passion for the ideas inside
5. Boundaries are ours to define NOT what defines us.

 

Get Out of The Way of Yourself!

Michaelangelo once said "Lord, free myself so I can please you"

Al Pacino once said "In acting you are trying to get yourself out of the way to deliver a great performance"

Ken Loach the film director said "A director is there to make a film come alive, and keep the story to its essential core"

Three very different people but all three are wanting to engage an audience. A company, a brand is also attempting to engage an audience...the customer. 

In a similar way it is imperative that we also get out of the way of ideas. We get out of the way of our own fears. We get out of the way of our own thoughts and experiences to deliver what the customer needs....

As per the above quotes

" We are here to bring ideas alive. The only way to do that is to get out of the way of ourselves and get out of the way of others. And keep the brand story true to ITS essential core"

Why do you want to be someone else?

A thought for this weekend for you to ponder on whilst on your walk or queuing in the shop!

People often spend too much time thinking  - I wish I was like.....

Of course respecting how people approach things, learning from others and being inspired by others is all part of our personal journey.

But why not turn the idea round...

Why not build a legacy, a life which others aspire to?

Why not aim for others to be like you?
