Guerrilla Marketing your Podcast
Here at Wiggly Wigglers a trying a podcast really appealed to me because of the direct contact it enables you to have with your audience, and customers or potential customers. It gives small businesses with a story a real advantage after so many years off being drowned out by advertising by big business.
However although 'search' online levels the playing field considerably offline you still have to find ways of inspiring folk to tune in. Here's just a few methods I have used in the real world:
1. If you have a catalogue make sure you feature in it some of the topics and conversations you have had in your podcast. We have found our most controversial topics to be worth a mention as they have the curiosity factor. (and use a quote from a listener to back your podcast up)
2. If possible involve a lot of people in your podcast. I heard about a Brass Band Podcast that features a different Band every week. Of course there are many band members in each band with all their respective family and friends who will all want to listen in, and this way the podcast audience multiplies enormously. Even if this isn't appropriate for your show, encourage the guests you do have on the show to download it and get their friends to listen in.
3. Make a CD of your podcast and hand it out at your talks or when appropriate. We have a customer base of eco gardeners and this sector of the community is not particular tech savvy and so a CD enables you to leverage your work even if your customers never download a show online.
4. Get an interview with a well known person in your industry. First of all they will probably help promote it but secondly some of our most popular shows have been when we interviewed Tim Smit from the Eden Project and Anita Roddick.
5. For starter tune into Anna's podcast The Engaging Brand and CC Chapman's Managing the Gray
and try Seth Godin's Blog.
Much much more to come...

I'll second Anna's podcast. It's a great listen and very informative.
Glad to see your liking Managing the Gray as well.
