Show#019 - Six Pixels of Engagement!

Show 19 is up and running and includes an interview with Mitch Joel who has a wonderful blog and also runs a weekly podcast called Six Pixels of Separation I wanted to speak to him as he is so passionate about the business world and I wanted to help listeners understand more about how technology can help with engagement, what we can learn from marketing and PR and how on a consistent basis we can re-recruit existing people. Thanks Mitch for inspiring me!

Engaging as a Talent OK I am going to embarrass myself now...not for the first time! In the UK there is a new p program - like American Idol - but Andrew Lloyd Webber the king of musicals is looking for a "new" Maria to play the lead in the Sound of Music. I am watching it not for the entertainment but to understand how the final person is chosen. All 10 girls have similar talents, all sound wonderful. So what is going to be the difference, at this point I believe it will be 2 things Authenticity: Do they look like Maria, do they have the ability to sell the story of Maria, do they act in a natural way...where they born to be Maria? Connection. Do they connect with the audience? Do the sell the emotions to the paying public? Do they make us smile, cry etc Mmmm you see my point? This will be fascinating to learn from for any leader...as daft as it may sound. One thing I have noted already is the use of the senses are important in achieving the above points ....connecting with the eyes, the right tone/pitch, how does it make you feel...

I have an Idea.... I was going through some old files and came across a leaflet from The Manufacturing Challenge...I smiled a gain when I read it so I thought I would share it. It relates a story of how ideas get squashed within the business world...each phrase comes under a slightly dimming light until the light goes out... "I have this great idea...." "It's great but.." "Is it in the budget?" "Does it fit in the guidelines?" "What is the pay back period?" "Have we got the feasibility study?" "We tried it 5 years ago - it didn't work" "Can't see the Board approving it" The light goes out....and the final person says "Well, it was just an idea..."
