- Listening - Really listening. People love to be listened to, the upside is you understand their issues and motivation 100% better.
- Google Reader - Set up a list of development blogs or brain fitness for your team to read.
- Google News - Set up a news alert about your industry, your company, your local area to keep them abreast of development.
- Podcasts - introduce them to podcasts that will address their development needs.
- Community projects are a great tool to give a potential manager. Real life experience of managing in a constructive environment.
- Find them a mentor across the business.
- Give them a project to own and run with - one which is visible to the company.
- Go through their CV twice a year and work with them to improve their experience - re recruiting them is great for retention.
- Build a link with a local uiniversity or college. You provide work experience in return for access to their resources.
- Set up a wiki about your area - and get people to share their knowledge and experiences of working in your team.

Thanks for sharing this! I find this extremely useful and I will try to implement some of these ideas at work. We are always trying to get people to engage, learn and build communities and this are some tools that support that very well. And more importantly that people probably are enticed to use.
