I've spend enough time in Italy to assure you that there's nothing remotely Italian about Starbucks: not the atmosphere, not the service, and definitely not the coffee! Though I doubt most Americans would want to drink their coffee standing up at a bar, as Italians frequently do in the mornings, nor tolerate the general crowding-rushing-shouting of such a place.
When Starbucks started invading Northern California, friends of a small local chain of coffee shops started printing up bumper stickers that said "Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks." They've pushed out a lot of local cafes. I think it's important to be aware that their brand stands for more than one thing.
