Number one is the position that most brands want to be, in their markets. I also think that the number one is central to success in social marketing or social media.
One step at a time in trying out social media tools.
One vision of what you want to achieve through social media
One to one relationship building with consumers
One set of values based on trust, transparency, empathy and passion
and of course by seeing that social media is but one tool in the full marketing tool box!
Social media has introduced the idea of conversations, groups, etc however, we should not forget that at the heart of social media success is the one to one relationship developed through using the engagement tools.
(For people new to The Engaging Brand podcast here are a couple of older shows that cover social media
Rohit Bhargava on How to Add Personality to Your Brand
Denise Shiffman on The Age of Engage )
No matter what we do it still comes down to the relationships we create with the people around us. It does not matter so much if the relationship is built in person, over the phone, or through social media like Facebook or Twitter. One person can lead you to the success you are looking for. All you have to do is get to know them!

I read your post with interest
"Social media has introduced the idea of conversations, groups, etc however, we should not forget that at the heart of social media success is the one to one relationship developed through using the engagement tools."
I'm not certain I agree that Social Media introduced the idea of conversations though
Before Marketing was used to broadcast (shout) at people in the 1980's, conversations is exactly how business used to be conducted. People used to talk with others, influence, then get on with business.

Excellent insight Anna. At the end of the day Social Media relationships are no different to real relationships are they? Its taken me a while to really appreciate this but I strongly believe SM provides businesses with an opportunity to get back to good-old-fashioned one on one relationships....

Interesting....do you know I also think it depends on the relationship people want to have with you. Social media like all "connecting media" has to be relevant. If you try and force a close relationship with someone who wants arms length then that is as bad as shouting via advertising, etc
I think the art is not in social media per se, but in creating special, relevant relationships that feel personalised yet are with "the world". Now that is the skill, but as to Mike's point hasn't that always been the skill?
Great conversation thanks everybody...love it when the comments make me think!
