Professional is a word which I like to deliver against...yet I do feel that professionalism can get in the way of the key element of business....
And that is ...why you are different?
Difference is what sells, difference is what can create the premium, difference is what separates you naturally from the competition....all with the caveat that the difference is good!
This is true for people as well as goods or services.
Yet in trying to be professional, the personality...the reason why you exist...the reason why people should want to be interested in you....can be lost.
Beware a lack of professionalism in the basics
Beware too much professionalism in the differences!!
I think there's a useful point here. Most career advice leads people to project an image, and a rather uniform one, rather than to bring out their ability to contribute in some individual, even unique, way. People read the advice and strive to turn themselves into clones rather than to project their individuality.

Soulds like a bit of a juggle. So, is it better to be too professional or not professional enough?

I guess we should thread a fine line between being professional and being personable. Keeping at it with both will create a strong brand with firm visions and strong customer relationships.

True but isn't life a juggle...its just when we are tired or drained we stop juggling and move towards one of the ends of the spectrum?

Absolutely....I think understanding that it is a fine line means you are half way there....and if all else fails I believe in the saying "Be you as everyone else is taken" and also its a lot less tiring than trying to be something that you are not!!

i agree....professional means delivering against your values not conforming to a view ?
Posted by: Anna Farmery | Oct 15, 2010 at 04:36 PM
completely agree. When you are the USP of your business, sticking to your values is key

Agree.....though i find few people actually think about them and even fewer actually build their USP around them? Values are aptly named...they create value :)
We must not leave it so long before we meet and be sarcastic to each other by the way :)
